Development of Pressure-Impulse Diagram for Reinforced Concrete Column Subjected to Blast Load
The need for protection of structures against blast load is increasing from the prospect of rising industrial accidents and terrorist activities. Recent blast incidents show that most terrorist activities target public buildings with high occupancy rates. The majority of these structures are constructed without considering the susceptibility of such disasters. These reinforced concrete (RC) structures are constructed with columns as the prime load-bearing (critical) structural element. Therefore, the present study analyzes the response of RC columns for the assessment of its safe response limits. These safe response limits are established with the help of pressure-impulse (P-I) diagrams for a given blast-loading scenario. Here, the numerical simulation of RC column is carried out using ABAQUS/Explicit® and Pressure-Impulse (P-I) diagrams are developed for impulsive, dynamic, and quasi-static loading conditions. Based on the numerical analysis performed, P-I diagrams are developed by considering the damage criterion in terms of mid-height displacement of the column. Further, a parametric analysis with change in column reinforcement ratio is conducted to develop Pressure-Impulse (PI) curves for damage levels of 2, 4 and 6%.
