Seismic Behavior Analysis of Geogrid-Reinforced Soil Slopes
Soil slope instability under earthquake loading can cause irreparable damages, necessitating the seismic behavior analysis of soil slopes. The soil reinforcement technique is employed to improve the seismic stability of soil structures, and geogrid is among the most widely-used soil reinforcement materials. In this research, the seismic behavior of geogrid-reinforced soil slopes was analyzed using numerical modeling. The numerical modeling accuracy in the assessment of seismic behavior of reinforced soil slopes was verified through laboratory shaking table experiments. The effects of geometrical arrangement and tensile strength of reinforcement layers on the permanent seismic displacement of soil slopes were investigated under different earthquake records. The effects of tensile strength of reinforcements on the yield acceleration of reinforced soil slopes were also analyzed. The permanent seismic displacements of reinforced soil slopes were determined under different conditions and then compared with the values obtained from the available recommendations. Finally, the effects of reinforcement layers on the acceleration magnification in geogrid-reinforced soil slopes were studied. The results can be considered as a valuable step towards evaluating permanent seismic displacements of geogrid-reinforced soil slopes.
