Crystal Fields and the Quadrupolar Kondo Effect in a Model Uranium Impurity
Abstract While many normal state properties of the heavy-electron superconductors UBc13 and CeCu2Si2 are very similar (in particular the specific heat and resistivity; see Stewart, 1984), there are notable differences. For example CeCu2Si2 exhibits a quasielastic peak in the magnetic neutron scattering cross section (Horn, et. al., 1981) at precisely the 1 meV energy scale exhibited in the specific heat. UBe13 displays response centered at 15 meV with comparable width (Shapiro, et. al., 1985) despite a nearly identical low temperature specific heat to CeCu2Si2.
