Smart Health and Wellness Promoting Villages: A Case Study from India
As per the 2011 census of India, 68.8% of the Indian population resides in villages. In India, the government has developed certain schemes like Sansad Adarsh gram yojana for social development, cultural development and motivation among people for social mobilization of the village community; Unnat Bharat Abhiyan to enable higher educational institutions to work with the people of rural India in identifying development challenges and evolving appropriate solutions for accelerating sustainable growth; Ayushman Bharat which includes health and wellness centres for comprehensive primary healthcare, and village development and Pradhan Mantri Jan Arogya Yojana which is the largest health assurance scheme in the world, in terms of beneficiaries. On the basis of international and national experience, a smart sustainable village initiative has been taken up in India including governance, use of technology, resources, village services, community farming and healthy living. The core concept is holistic in approach and multisectoral participation with the integration and convergence of different sectors to address social determinants of health (Sustainable Agriculture, Environment, Education, Rural Development, etc.). This model of a smart and sustainable healthy village will bring all stakeholders under a coordinated framework and can be scaled up to all villages at the state, national and global level based on the characteristics of each region.
