Response of multiple-earthquake excitations on RC-framed buildings
Earthquakes are unavoidable natural disasters occurring around the world and resulting in damage or collapse of structures firmly connected to the ground surface. Recently, in Turkey 2023, it was found that huge damage had been done because of multiple earthquakes. Understanding the phenomenon of the collapse of damaged structures is of primary importance to avoiding socio-economic losses in developing and well-developed nations. A study on structures subjected to multiple earthquakes will give a brief idea to the natural disaster management authorities, about the collapse of similar types of structures. This study is focused on investigating the seismic vulnerability and collapse probability of RC educational buildings in India when subjected to single and multiple recorded earthquakes, along two horizontal perpendicular directions. Incremental Dynamic Analysis (IDA) is conducted to evaluate the response and damage of structures from an elastic to an inelastic and up to a collapse state. The structural response is evaluated in terms of maximum horizontal displacement, residual displacement, inter-story drift ratio, base shear, and probability of collapse in two orthogonal horizontal directions. From the analysis, it is observed that multiple earthquakes impose higher ductility demands compared to individual earthquakes. It is also found that multiple earthquakes have a significant impact on structures designed according to a single maximum considered earthquake in reference to Indian seismic standards.
