Abstract A uniform variational formulation of sensitivity analysis for physically nonlinear plates is presented in terms of generalized stress and strains. Both the external and internal boundary shape modifications are treated within this formulation. Next the optimal design problems for stress and deflection constraints are formulated and relevant optimality conditions are derived.
