The Influence of Vernacular Ventilation Techniques on the Architectural Landscape of Iran
Iranian architecture is renowned for its innovative use of traditional ventilation strategies to address the region’s diverse climatic conditions. This study explores the profound impact of these vernacular techniques on the formation and evolution of the built environment in Iran. Through a comprehensive investigation of three distinct case study locations—Yazd, Bushehr, and Sistan—the research team examines the design, integration, and performance of traditional ventilation systems, including wind towers (Badgirs), courtyards, and underground cooling channels (qanats). The findings highlight the remarkable ingenuity and adaptability of the Iranian architectural tradition in addressing the challenges posed by varying climatic contexts. The study reveals how the careful placement, orientation, and proportions of these ventilation-driven architectural features have been crucial in optimising thermal comfort and energy efficiency. The comparative analysis across the case studies highlights the diversity of the ventilation strategies employed, each tailored to the unique environmental conditions of the respective regions. The research also delves into the broader contextual factors that have shaped the development of these traditional practices, including climatic considerations, sustainable design principles, and socio-cultural values.
