Abstract The thermodynamics of liquid water and ice in small pores in the presence of dissolved salts are reviewed. The salt influence is dominant at pore sizes above 10–30 nm while interfacial effects control the behavior in smaller pores. The paper also provides a brief discussion of growth pressures in small pores.
