Study of Mixed Valent Alloys Sm1−x ScXS by X-Ray Absorption Technique
Abstract Sm in SmS is divalent and the compound is a black-coloured Semiconductor. Measurements of its lattice parameter (1), magnetic susceptibility (2) and L111 X-ray absorption measurements (3) suggest that its cationic valence goes abruptly from about 2 to 2.7 on applying a pressure of 6.5 Kbar at 295 K — revealing first order phase transition to intermediate valence. The pressure-induced electronic transition in SmS can also be induced by substituting a trivalent rare earth ion in the SmS lattice (4). SmS exhibits a discontinuous transition in the valence of Sm as the yttrium concentration is increased (5). Similar effects have been observed for Sm1−x GdXS (6) anc SmS1−xOX (7). Alloys SmS of with LaS, on the other hand, exhibit a continuous Sm valence transition as the Lanthanum concentration is increased (8).
