Experimental Study on Non-ductile Reinforced Concrete Columns Strengthened with Latticed Steel Jacketing
An experimental program was implemented to assess the effectiveness of latticed steel jacketing of concrete columns. The investigation was aimed at studying the behavior of shear-controlled columns rehabilitated by a combination of steel angles, straps and plates or by epoxy injection and patching. Seven large-scale RC columns were built following the 1960s design and construction practice in Mexico City and were not detailed for ductile behavior. Two columns were tested to failure. One of these columns was retested after it was repaired using epoxy resin crack injection and epoxy grout patching. This technique was found to successfully recover 94% of the original strength and stiffness. Five columns were rehabilitated with steel jackets. For columns jacketed with a steel lattice, the variables studied included the angle size and spacing of steel straps. In some jacketed columns, confining plates at the column end were provided. Tests indicated that latticed steel jacketing was effective to rehabilitate the existing structure. The rehabilitated specimens showed better stiffness, strength, and total energy dissipation characteristics than those of the existing structure.
