Ensuring a Sustainable Development Ecosystem
The chapter addresses sustainability, one of the defining elements of a smart village, one that is also a defining element for the world and humanity in general. Sustainability provides a necessary balance to the concept of rural progress, seen in terms of economic and material development of villages, and brings home the point that development meeting the needs of today must not compromise the ability to do the same for future generations. While high-level sustainability objectives of sustainability may be common for the urban and rural worlds, a smart village perspective on building and ensuring a sustainable ecosystem must take into consideration the unique characteristics of the community in question. Essentially, a sustainable development ecosystem in a smart village should provide a strong sense of place for its residents, generation after generation. This chapter provides this perspective and sets the stage for case studies in later chapters.
