Wear Measurements and Monitoring at Macro- and Microlevel
Abstract Wear as a surface loss of substance resulted from friction is considered in connection with various factors affecting tribosystem. These factors, first of all deformation and adhesion, are shown to be dependent on a scale factor as a result of combined effect of surface topography and material properties. The main trends in development of wear testing techniques, data collection, processing and presentation are discussed. Problems of test data reproducibility and comparability are shown to be very important and the attempts to solve these problems are examined. Scale factor in wear measurements is discussed. Concept of wear monitoring and its main purposes are considered in the context of providing non-failure, long-term operation at optimum friction performance of a tribosystem. Wear monitoring tools based on analysis of debris accumulation in a lubricated machine are reviewed.
