Smart Village – The Canadian Experience
The concept of PURA, first introduced by former President of India, Dr. A.P.J. Kalam, has global reach. This chapter delves into the global application of PURA. While in Canada, Dr. Kalam challenged Canada’s politicians and thinking class to embrace the concept of PURA. This chapter attempts to provide tangible examples of where PURA, as a concept, is actually in practice in Canada. The innovation as prescribed through Dr. Kalam’s PURA and as implemented in these smart villages may not directly be attributable to Dr. Kalam’s model of PURA per se, but the success in the communities described in this chapter can be interpreted, socialized and deployed in ways that are reflected in and through his model. The communities of Sioux Lookout, Ontario and Cochrane, Ontario are highlighted. The innovation, technology deployed, community leadership and engagement have been among many of the reasons for the success and sustainability of these two communities. The futures of Sioux Lookout and Cochrane are set and in so doing have led to extraordinary advancements in connectivity and benefit for citizens.
