The Loading on a Vertical Cylinder in Random Waves at High Reynolds Numbers
Abstract The inertia, drag, inline and transverse force coefficients have been determined for a vertical cylinder of 0.5 m diameter with a relative surface roughness k/D ≅ 1.2 x 10−4 in random waves. Waves with a significant wave height of 1.5 m and a peak period of 5.9 s were generated in a large wave channel, at a mean water depth of 5.0 m. Reynolds numbers up to 5.3 x 105 have been achieved for Keulegan-Carpenter numbers up to 15.5. Comparisons are made with results obtained in periodic waves.
