Upgrade of Water and Sewerage Facilities in Slovakia to Achieve Compliance with Major EU Directives
8. Conclusion As described in the paper, in the future, the Slovak state water management policy has to be based on well defined water management objectives, which inter alia include: Provision of sufficient volume and quality of drinking water for inhabitants and other consumers in concert with the Directive 98/83/EEC; Provision of collection and adequate treatment of wastewater in line with the Directive 93/271/EEC and especially with respect to the polluter pays principle; Achievement of a high level of environmental protection within the context of sustainable development; and Achievement of an adequate level of flood prevention. The ultimate goal of Slovakia is to harmonise water management policy with the requirements of the European Water Framework Directive 2000/60/EC.
