Gabion Walls—A Remedial Measure for Slope Stabilization
Failure of embankment slopes are triggered mainly by excessive rainfall, change in water level, erosion and seepage. The study presented comprises a road laid on embankment caving in, thus leading to a collapse of the retaining wall along side of river during rainy season. The site is situated at Betim-Verem stretch of Nerul village, Goa. The road is 7 m in width located along the side of river with one side of embankment slope is retained by a retaining wall of height 3.5 m on the river side. The main aim of this study is to highlight how gabion wall can be used for riverbank protection. Various remedial measure can be provided such as concrete gravity retaining wall, cantilever retaining wall, gabion wall. Gabion retaining wall is one of the most cost-effective and efficient ways to stabilize a slope. Gabion walls are also preferred for its efficiency of drainage in comparison to the gravity retaining walls. In present study attempt is made to design and provide a gabion wall and prepare a cost comparison with a concrete gravity retaining wall for same site condition.
