Liquefaction Inside and Outside Bands and Liquefaction Layer Characteristics Related to the 2016 Kumamoto Earthquake
Liquefaction bands attributable to the 2016 Kumamoto earthquake in Japan appeared in a former streambed and part of a natural levee. In this study, three liquefaction bands that appeared in the Kumamoto plain at this time are targeted. Moreover, reading sand boil was conducted using 50 m mesh and aerial photographs. Boring data (BD) were collected in the objective regions. Using these data, after liquefaction judgments were conducted by Specifications for Highways Bridges (2012), characteristics of liquefaction layers inside and outside of the liquefaction bands were assessed. As a result, inside the three liquefaction bands, a sandy soil layer is deposited near the ground surface at BD locations where sand boiling was confirmed. It is also confirmed that the liquefaction layer thickness is as much as 5 m, which affects the occurrence of sand boil in liquefaction bands. This is a common feature of the ground characteristics of all liquefaction bands.
