An Operating Framework for Assessing Road Safety in a Wide-Road Network with Constrained Time for Action: The Milano-Cortina 2026 Winter Olympic Games Road Case Study
In order to reduce road crash fatalities and injuries, it is important to address challenges related to safety assessment, evaluate wide-road networks prior to mega-events and implement appropriate measures for different road conditions. This study addresses these challenges by presenting an operating framework for rapidly assessing the safety of the “Via Olimpica” road, which will host the 2026 Winter Olympic Games. The framework integrates four data sources and follows a seven-step process, combining Road Network Screening (RNS) and simplified Road Infrastructure Safety Management Systems (RISMS). It identifies critical road sections and blackspots and provides recommendations to improve road safety. The framework is a tool for road authorities, practitioners and public administrations, facilitating the prioritisation of safety measures within limited resources and time constraints.
