A platform for research: civil engineering, architecture and urbanism
Climate Change and the Resilience Cause in Masvingo City Urban Landscape, Zimbabwe
Despite many global agreements made on climate change, little has been done on the provision for landscape resilience to climate change in Masvingo City. The aim of this research is to examine landscape resilience to climate change in Masvingo City to enable it to navigate change, build local capacity to respond to disturbance and prepare for uncertainty and foster a transition to more sustainable urban trajectories. A review of literature was done to gain insight on what other scholars wrote concerning the urban landscape resilience under the impact of climate change. A mixed methods approach was used whereby interviews were done to solicit data from town planners in Masvingo City Council, Department of Physical Planning and Environmental Management Agency and observations and focus group discussions were conducted to complement data from interviews. Purposive sampling technique was used to select research subjects. The findings exhibit that existing urban landscapes partially meet the principles of resilience to climate change and that there is lack of regulatory frameworks to provide for landscape resilience to climate change. Therefore, the key findings point at the need for urgent action towards the establishment of a planning legislation covering landscape resilience to climate change.
