BIM-Based Augmented Reality for Facility Maintenance Management
Facility Maintenance Management represents a significant financial burden, accounting for over 65% of the total lifecycle costs of buildings. Traditional methods, heavily reliant on manual processes and disjointed information systems, continue to dominate this field despite their inefficiencies. This chapter introduces a transformative framework that integrates BIM with Augmented Reality technologies to revolutionize FMM processes. By leveraging BIM’s detailed digital representations and AR’s real-time data overlay capabilities, the framework aims to significantly enhance the efficiency and effectiveness of maintenance operations. It facilitates a systematic approach where end-users can directly report maintenance issues, which are then efficiently managed by the FM team. This integrated approach not only streamlines workflows but also empowers decision-making processes, enabling the FM team to devise and implement optimized maintenance strategies effectively. As a result, this chapter anticipates a reduction in the overall costs associated with maintenance activities in buildings, marking a significant shift from traditional practices towards more dynamic, interactive, and cost-effective maintenance management systems.
