Bridging the Urban-Rural Divide
The divide between urban and rural communities of the world can be described in both quantitative and qualitative terms. International organizations such as United Nations and other social and demographic research organizations have analysed the many elements that characterize the urban and rural communities and allow us to develop an awareness of the ever-widening divide between the two categories of communities. Some of the major smart city initiatives in countries, such as Canada, are described, and the lack of similar initiatives in the area of smart villages is highlighted. The impact of such a divide that would continue to widen unless the spotlight is placed on development of rural areas by way of smart village development is described.
