A platform for research: civil engineering, architecture and urbanism
Abstract The purpose of this chapter is to provide a backdrop to the estate house by conducting a brief historical survey of a selection of individual houses that help us to understand the evolution of the house, especially with regard to the provision of their interior facilities. I examine what makes a home in order to assist in my appraisals of both the houses in this chapter and Chap. 2 . Whilst many of the accepted activities continue through time, it becomes apparent that their location can change or their descriptions change to become something else. It will be seen that houses had more space than those built now, but they had less daylight due to modern fenestration techniques.
