Impact of Odd Even Scheme on Transportation Systems in Delhi
Abstract Delhi, one of the largest populated urban areas in the world is classed as the world’s fifth megacity and its pollution levels are increasing exponentially day by day. Delhi government implemented a scheme called odd even scheme to counter the pollution levels, in this scheme the private vehicles (cars) will be allowed to run across the city based on their registration numbers i.e. Odd number plates one day and Even number plates on other day. The experiment was carried out in Delhi from 1st January 2016 to 15th January 2016. In this paper the impacts of odd even scheme has been studied with respect to the travel patterns and impact of quality of the public transportation systems such as Bus, Sub-urban Rail and Metro. A detailed analysis was made how the qualities of the services are affected due to the scheme and suggestions were made to successful the scheme. Some of the results shows the travel speeds of car were reduced up to 16% and travel times are increased up to 20% after the scheme period, bus speed are reduced to 29% and the travel time of bus are increased to 40% after the scheme period. The ridership of the Bus, Metro and Sub-urban Rail is increased to 18, 10 and 5% respectively. The survey results shows that about 75% of the people are satisfied with the overall Metro system satisfaction same was observed to be around 88% before the scheme was implemented.
