A platform for research: civil engineering, architecture and urbanism
Documenting Italian Architecture of the Second Half of the Twentieth Century
In the last decade, knowledge of contemporary architecture has become relevant to the conservation and dissemination of the Italian architectural heritage. Since the 2000s, various stakeholders have promoted initiatives and activities for the knowledge of Italian architecture of the second half of the twentieth century. This trend is confirmed by the several documentation initiatives aimed at developing online archives and databases with different levels of interaction and information retrieval. The proliferation of these diverse projects has highlighted the need for a comprehensive cataloguing initiative to systematize these documentation projects and to coordinate past and future research activities in order to promote an organic action for the knowledge, interpretation and dissemination of Italian post-1945 architecture. In 2002, the Italian Ministry of Culture (MiC) launched the “Italian Architectures of the Second Half of the 20th Century” project, which continues to evolve as a dynamic online platform for researchers and non-specialists. This ongoing project systematizes the results of the documentation and at the same time provides the basis for further development and updating of the knowledge of the contemporary architectural language. The essay not only examines and illustrates the workflow adopted, but also delves into the results of the documentation and cataloguing activities undertaken by the MiC. It describes the criteria used to archive, interpret, systematize and assess the value of the contemporary architecture recorded. Finally, a reflection on the potential of digital representations in disseminating and visually communicating the contents of the documented architectures is proposed.
