Engaging Intangible Heritage for the Sustainability of the Historic City of Ayutthaya
This paper aims to explore the state of the interrelation of intangible and tangible heritage found in the Historic City of Ayutthaya and to discuss how intangible heritage helps sustain the city. Beginning with the recognition and perception of tangible and intangible heritage of the authorities, heritage professionals, and the general public in Thailand, the author identifies the problematic issues of the separation of tangible and intangible heritage in the national context. Then, the tangible and intangible heritage embedded in Ayutthaya will be introduced based on the existing approaches and relevant national legal framework. Besides it will be explored why and how they are important in sustaining the city through a case study. The impacts from the construction of the high-speed rail station and system including the relocation of a religious building will be discussed. In addition, the sustainability of Ayutthaya will be explored by considering the UNESCO’s Culture 2030 Indicators. In addition, learning from one of the most popular Thai soap opera; ‘Love destiny’, the concluding part recommends what should be done to widen the understanding of the integration of tangible and intangible aspects of the Historic City of Ayutthaya which probably ensure the sustainability of this city.
