Experimental Study on Ultra-High Performance Concrete Columns Against Low-Velocity Impact
Abstract An experimental investigation on the reinforced ultra-high performance concrete (UHPC) columns against low velocity lateral impact is presented in this paper. Seven UHPC columns $$ \left( {f_{c}^{'} > 125\,\text{MPa}} \right) $$ and two conventional concrete (C40) columns were tested under free-falling drop-weights that impacted at the mid-span. Test results showed that the conventional concrete specimens, regardless of their cross-section shape, developed severe diagonal shear cracks, forming a shear-plug under the impact point. The ultra-high performance concrete columns, on the other hand, only developed minor flexural crack even under more severe impact loads.
