Operational and Technical Development of Saudi Arabia’s Ports
Abstract At present, Saudi Arabia’s major ports rank among the most efficient ports of the world in terms of average discharge rates per berth and day and, consequently, in terms of turnaround times. This has been achieved in spite of a tremendous growth in overall cargo throughput which has more than doubled during the last three years, i.e. from 10.6 million metric tonnes in 1976 to 24.4 million metric tonnes in 1979. The simultaneous growth in operating efficiency and cargo volume has been attained by a combination of modern management techniques and large scale investment in basic berth capacity, as well as in sophisticated cargo handling equipment and in storage facilities.
