Salt Cavern Stability Evaluation
In this chapter, a rock mechanics experiment is introduced, and a method of evaluating salt cavern stability is established. The stability evaluation methods used for salt cavern gas storage spaces are introduced in this chapter using a typical salt cavern gas storage space in China as an example. Stability evaluation needs to be carried out in the design and operation stages of salt cavern gas storage construction. At present, the stability evaluation is mainly conducted using a combination of laboratory rock experiments and numerical simulations. The mechanical properties of the layered salt rocks are obtained from the laboratory experiments, including the elastic modulus, Poisson’s ratio, compressive strength, and creep characteristics. Based on the experimental data, research is conducted using methods such as theoretical analysis, numerical analysis, and numerical simulation in order to ensure the comprehensive evaluation of the stability. An analysis of the operating pressure, gas production rate, and reasonableness of the operating conditions of the salt cavern gas storage space is conducted during the long-term injection and production operation.
