Consideration of the uplift pressure of water in calculations of the stability of concrete dams on rock foundations
Conclusions 1. Consideration of the total value of uplift, which corresponds to a state of limit equilibrium, in calculations of the stability of concrete structures on rock foundations is inadmissible and leads to results contradicting dam design and operating practice. 2. Correct consideration of uplift and a substantiated decrease of the value of coefficientα 2 makes it possible to obtain higher values of the stability factors of concrete dams or to achieve for the same reliability a decrease of their cost. 3. It is necessary to set up special investigations to study the coefficient of effectiveness of transmitting upliftα 2 under various actual conditions.
