Manufactured sand (MS) refers to rock particles (excluding soft and weathered particles) with a particle size of less than 4.75 mm, which can be obtained by mechanical crushing and screening after soil removal treatment. Compared with natural sand, MS has remarkable characteristics. Its particle shape is mostly triangular or rectangular, with a rough surface, sharp edges, and corners, and the sphericity is usually smaller than that of natural sand. Currently, the MS is mostly medium-coarse sand that can adjust the gradation and contains a certain amount of fines, and the fineness modulus is mostly between 2.8 and 3.5. Due to the different processes and equipment for producing MS all over the country, the quality of MS varies greatly, which is mainly affected by particle shape, fineness modulus, grading, and fines content.
