Teaching Sharing by Design
Crucial to both the present viability and future evolution of the sharing system are not only the knowledge about sharing by design but more importantly how it is transmitted to future generations. This chapter discusses and demonstrates how the systems approach can be adapted and applied to teaching architecture design studios focusing on designing complex sharing systems. It argues that the systems approach-oriented studio pedagogy can effectively push the boundaries of design investigation, allowing designers to broaden the scope of intervention beyond the disciplinary boundary of architecture and also to continuously review and problematize the design schemes. A postgraduate urban design studio of the Master of Architecture program at the Department of Architecture, National University of Singapore is presented as a case study. The systems approach is also found helpful for facilitating collaboration and peer-to-peer learning among students.
