Comparison of Cost of Reinforced Concrete Frame Buildings Designed Using IS Code and Unified Performance-Based Design Method
Codal design of buildings is essentially a force-based method of design. The main limitation of this method is that it cannot design buildings for some target performance criteria such as drift. One of the alternative methods is direct displacement-based (DDBD) method of design where the drift of the building can be a target criterion. The Unified performance-based design (UPBD) approach can consider both performance level and drift, and hence, is a preferable design method. Question arises if UPBD method makes buildings costlier than the codal designed buildings or not. This point has been investigated in this paper. In the first stage of the present study, 9 numbers of reinforced concrete frame buildings have been designed as per IS 1893–2016. The actual drifts and performance levels of the designed buildings are evaluated through nonlinear analyses. In the second stage buildings are designed for the same drift and performance levels using UPBD method. The cost of the buildings is evaluated in terms of volume of concrete in beams and columns, the foundation and slab system being assumed same in both sets of buildings. The study reveals that the cost of buildings designed using UPBD method is lesser as compared to the codal buildings.
