Silicone Rubber
Abstract Silicone rubber sales have had a spectacular growth in the 40 years since the product was first introduced commercially. Even in the last 10 years, silicone rubber sales have done very well in contrast to most organic rubbers. This growth has taken place not only in the United States, but especially in Japan and Western Europe. The United States now accounts for 50% of the total sales of 100 million pounds. 1,2 The increase in sales is due to two factors: first, the unique properties of silicone rubber relative to organic elastomers over a wide temperature range (−150°F to 600°F); and second, the cost of silicone rubber, which has improved relative to the organic elastomers.3
