Contemporary Challenges and Sustainable Solutions for Historic Gardens’ Conservation
Being part of the urban green infrastructure of cities, historic gardens and cultural landscapes hold major positive impacts on urban landscapes’ sustainability and biodiversity; however, the efficiency of the traditional heritage conservation solutions seems degrading due to the climate change impacts and the contemporary challenges including massive tourism, maintenance issues, and social challenges. Therefore, new durable, sustainable and ecosystem friendly solutions should be implemented. This paper discusses the possibilities of improving the quality of historic gardens’ ecosystem and its impacts on the biodiversity and enhancement of the urban environment. The study method consists of discussing the theoretical background of renewal strategies; the evaluation of practical examples of several newly adapted sustainable solutions and their integration in their immediate environment; lastly, presenting the applied sustainable solutions for the maintenance of the green elements of Al-Hambra gardens in Spain and enhancing the impacts of climate change in the Mediterranean and semi-arid region. Based on the studied examples and the literature background, this research sorts out the most efficient and applicable solutions for adaptation in similar contexts of historic gardens.
