A User-Centered Ergonomic Design of Cashew Nut Sheller to Mitigate Musculoskeletal Disorders Among Cashew Nut Shelling Workers
The present study focused on designing a user-centered ergonomic cashew nut sheller (i.e., a mechanical device to crack the hard-shelled cashew nuts) to mitigate musculoskeletal disorders among cashew nut shelling (CNS) workers. This study consisted of three separate phases. In the first phase, identification of user requirements based on group discussions, screening of gathered user requirements, and questionnaire survey were conducted. Based on the insights from the first phase, three preliminary design concepts were generated and screened down to one final concept by users’ consensus. Eventually, the prototype of selected concept of ergonomic cashew nut sheller was developed by applying anthropometric data of users. In the third phase, the ergonomic evaluation of the newly developed ergonomic cashew nut sheller was performed using Rapid Upper Limb Assessment (RULA) and Rapid Entire Body Assessment (REBA) methods. Results showed improvement in RULA and REBA scores, indicating that the musculoskeletal risk was minimized with new ergonomic cashew nut sheller compared to existing sheller. The study demonstrated that the user-centered ergonomic cashew nut sheller design is useful for mitigating WMSDs among CNS workers.
