A comprehensive review on design and analysisof spur gears
Spur gear design and analysis is the most sought-after research area in the gear design field. It provides detailed quantitative analysis for accurate gear design. As a result, design optimization becomes essential to improve gear transmission performance. However, there has to be a trade-off between design optimization and contact stress control. The majority of the existing literature focuses on a specific design criterion or a few design approaches. In this circumstance, a thorough analysis of different design approaches and contact stress control schemes is unavoidable. This survey suggests a new way to classify design approaches. The categorization of various design approaches used in the gear design process forms the basis for our classification. Furthermore, this review includes the work that links the different design parameters to performance characteristics as well as the open literature that relates the spur gear design parameters to improve sensitivity to possible schemes for contact stress control. The major issues in the design of gears for its improvement are also explored. The gear design classification and different performance parameters in terms of methodology and experiments pointed out in this article are encouraging enough to attract the designer working in this area.
