A Simple Analytical Model of the Damping Ratio Considering Effect of Particle Breakage
In this study, an attempt has been made to focus on the effect of particle breakage on one of the dynamic properties of granular materials using an upgraded version of the SANISAND model. Mostly, Analytical models for estimating damping ratio during cyclic loading focus on hard grained sands. In the present work, one such model is upgraded to predict the damping ratio considering the effect of particle breakage. An enhanced version of the SANISAND constitutive model named SS08-Breakage-Model, capable of predicting particle breakage under cyclic loading, is adopted to determine the variation of damping ratio with shear strain amplitude. Numerical simulations are performed using the SANISAND-breakage model for crushable and non-crushable sands. Finally, the parametric study is carried out to evaluate the effect of particle breakage on the variation of damping ratio with shear strain amplitude by varying relative density, confining pressure, and breakage constant. The study reveals a relationship between the breakage constant and the damping ratio for crushable soils.
