The Typology of the Mullions and Transoms Façade System
The typology of the mullions and transoms façade system is determined according to the use of frame profiles, both vertical and horizontal, which follow the morpho-typological course of the architectural organism, according to the priority preparation of the elements and the construction in place. The vertical profiles of the frame (mullions) and the horizontal profiles (transoms) of quadrangular geometry, are composed according to the expected mechanical stresses, the overall dimensions of the modules and the value of the moment of inertia. The profiles may be stiffened (by means of the cantilevers) or they may be executed in the combined form, making two disconnected and specular box sections. The application of the glazing panels is carried out in a mechanical form, considering the connection on the front face of the profiles by means of the arrangement of the central linear pin (provided with the insulating insert), the cavity slots for the internal gaskets and the press fastening. The analysis considers the typological, functional and relational coordination procedures between the mullion and transom profiles, in order to establish planar continuity on the support plane for the insulating glass panels, in order to achieve homogeneity with regard to tightness (air, water), water collection within the profiles and connections to the building structures. In addition, the analysis examines the technical interfaces between the façade system and the opening frames, noting the criteria for insertion and functional continuity between the profiles. In addition to the main type of aluminium framing, the study is completed with indications regarding the composition of the system with steel and PVC profiles.
