Abstract Timber is an important global commodity that is used in construction in nearly all nations and in many types of structures. For example, in 1987 in the United States, more wood products (40.4 billion dollar value) were used in construction than all other major materials (metal, concrete, gypsum, and tile) combined (37.5 billion dollar value)*. It is a renewable resource that requires low energy in its conversion to structural components, as well as being a resource which provides essential ecological benefits in relation to the use of alternate materials. These attributes ensure its place as an important structural material for the future.
