Neutron and X-Ray Studies on Time Evolution of the Ordered Multi-Lamellar Phase in Aqueous Solution of Dipalmitoyl-Phosphatidylcholine
Abstract Bilayers of dipalmitoyl-phosphatidylcholine (DPPC) in water have a lamellar structure and exhibit phase transisions at the temperature Tm1=35.3 and Tm2=41.4°C1,2). The transition at Tml is evidenced by a small anomaly of specific heat and called a pretransition. The transition at Tm2is associated with a pronounced anomaly of specific heat and is called a main transition, which is of the order-disorder type concerning the hydrocarbon chains. The hydrocarbon chains are arranged in order and the bilayers of lipid have a wavy structure below Tm2’, corresponding to P β ’phase. The P β phase is transformed into L β phase below TmlThe disordered phase above Tm2is a liquid crystalline which is typically smectic, corresponding to L propto; phase
