Influence of Smart Cities Sustainability on Citizen’s Quality of Life
Two main trends are converging in the urban areas in the last years: on one hand, the implementation of ICTs as strategic tools in the cities to become them smart, and on another hand, based in the intergenerational equity concept, the United Nations have proposed to achieve sustainable development goals in these urban spaces. Both trends are joining efforts in improving the citizens’ quality of life (QLF). Nonetheless, there is a research gap in the link of both tendencies for improving the citizens’ QLF. Therefore, this chapter seeks to analyze whether smart axes related to Sustainable Development Goals (SDG) initiatives included in the flagship 5 of the UN-Habitat, as those measured in the main rankings of smart cities as indicators have really an impact on the citizens’ QLF in the cities considered as “smart” in the European countries, as well as to identify the main axis that could have a greater impact on this QLF. Findings of this research seem to link SDG in smart cities with higher quality of life, mainly linked to aspects like the environmental protection and productivity.
