Raman spectroscopy and mechanical properties
Abstract Over recent years there has been an upsurge of interest in using Raman spectroscopy to characterize the deformation of polymers, fibres and composites. In particular, it has been found that the technique of Raman spectroscopy in conjunction with an optical microscope (the ‘Raman Microscope’ or the ‘Raman Microprobe’) is particularly useful. The Raman effect is shown schematically in Fig. 6.1 where a beam of light of frequency v 0 is scattered by a material. The majority of the radiation is scattered elastically at the same frequency (the Rayleigh scattering) but a small amount of the radiation is scattered inelastically at a different frequency ±△v (the Raman scattering). It is this inelastically scattered light which carries information about molecular vibrations in the material and so is useful for the characterization of the materials.
