Urban Design for Safe Walking and Biking
While the use of automobiles as a means of transport is often associated with negative environmental, economic, and health outcomes, walking and cycling are modes of active transportation which offer an array of benefits. Solutions aimed toward improving features of the built environment through simple measures such as paths which are well-indicated and proper signage will significantly contribute to the safety of pedestrians and cyclists and can generate a cultural shift from car use to walking and cycling (Winters et al., J Urban Health 87:969–993, 2010).
