Design of Highway Sign Supporting Structures with Various Structural Systems
Road signs are very important for the safe and efficient movement of road users in urban and non-urban areas. The road signs shall be placed such that the information given on them can easily be understood by the drivers and in time. These road signs should be provided with an efficient supporting system that can hold them in position without obstructing the traffic. The sign structures should be provided by keeping sufficient vertical and lateral clearance to avoid accidental events. These structures are mainly sensitive to wind loading. The main aim of this paper is to explain the two types of structural systems for overhead road signs. The steel overhead sign support was designed in two ways which include a four-chord truss and a two-chord monotube type. The static wind loading was considered as per provisions IRC 67:2022 for the analysis of sign structures. The design of structures was carried out as per provisions IS 800:2007. The responses of the structural systems were identified in terms of the strength and stiffness of various components of the structure. The base plate, anchor bolt, and foundation were also designed.
