Summary The paper begins by mentioning the principles of mechanical similitude which are relevant to the reproduction and testing technique of physical models. It goes on with examining the parameters suitable for defining the characteristics of rocky masses with their complex discontinuities and then with a brief description of the techniques used in respecting the similitude of these parameters in the model. Several examples of the most representative geomechanical models are therefore taken into consideration and the most significant and interesting results obtained from them. In particular the tests carried out on the geomechanical model of the Canelles Dam (Spain) are reported in detail examining the behavior of the reinforcing works suggested and making a choice based on the tests carried out on the model.
