The Perspective of Daniele Barbaro
Renaissance scholar Daniele Barbaro, perhaps best known for his commentary on Vitruvius and his patronage of Palladio, also worked extensively on perspective. This paper focuses on the exercises of La pratica della perspettiva by Daniele Barbaro, as well as on the monumental unpublished manuscripts he prepared before publishing his heavily synthesised treatise. This paper examines the position between theoretical understanding of perspective as an abstract science and its application by practicing artists, and places Barbaro’s perspective study firmly in the context of his immediate predecessors and contemporaries, including Alberti, Piero della Francesca, Pacioli, Dürer and Serlio.
