Influence of Different Warm Mix Chemical Additives on Characteristics of Warm Mix Asphalt
Warm mix asphalt (WMA) is the replacement for Hot Mix Asphalt (HMA) and WMA is a technology that diminishes the mixing, laying, & compaction of asphalt mixtures. In the present research, The impact of the warm mix additives on binder & mix properties was investigated using a viscosity grade (VG-40) binder. Two chemical warm mix additives were used for the study: Evotherm (E) and Rediset (R). As per Indian Standard (IS-73-2013), the basic tests on the control binder (VG-40) and blended binder (VG-40 +E and VG-40+R) were performed. As per Morth specification mix design for the Dense Bituminous Macadam (DBM II) by using VG40 with and without warm mix additives was also performed. The bituminous mix was prepared at different compaction temperatures 105-degree Celsius to 165-degree Celsius with an equal interval of 15 degrees Celsius, and for finding the optimum compaction temperature for warm mix asphalt two tests were conducted (bulk density and resilient modulus test). The study discovered the chemical warm mix binder is unable to forecast the temperature of mixing & compaction by using the binder’s viscosity. While they affected the mixture by improving its compatibility and, as a consequence, minimizing the required temperatures for mixing and compaction, and Also, the results showed that, in comparison to the control mix, both additives increased bulk density and slightly enhanced resilience modulus.
