The Building Master
Abstract In this chapter, an interview is made to the author of Ibere Camargo Foundation project, architect Álvaro Siza, whose experience and reputation is worldwide recognized with numerous prizes like Pritzker. After the experience of making other art museums, like Serralves Foundation in Porto, Portugal or the Art’s Museum in Santiago de Compostela in Spain, between 1997 and Álvaro Siza “played” with the Brazilian architecture freedom to evoke his great masters, Lina Bo Bardi and Oscar Niemyer. The articulation of various infrastructures in a museum is a delicate task, because different conditions must be provided for objects of opposite scales, in the same room a small relic can be exhibited together with a giant painting. The light conditions, ventilation and temperature are often different in the same room, and the project must predict all these variations. Siza and his team, Jorge Silva for the structures, Raul Bessa for the AVAC and ventilations, Raul Serafim for electrical and TIC equipment, and José Luiz Canal in the building site, made in this master piece, an example of an integrated project where design team and construction team where almost the same. In this long conversation made for the second edition of Cadernos d’Obra in 2012, the project development, the articulation with engineering and building process where explored to understand the design process of this accomplice design team that Álvaro Siza works with
