Deformation and Failure Behavior of the Isolated Single Stone Column with and Without Geosynthetic Encasement
Abstract Model tests and corresponding numerical analysis have been conducted on the isolated single stone column to study the failure behavior and bulging deformation behavior of the stone columns with and without geosynthetic encasement. The model test results indicate significant improvement in loading capacity of the stone columns due to geosynthetic encasement. In numerical analysis, the geosynthetic encasement was simply replaced by a cable element inside the stone column, which provides a convenient way to simulate encasement behavior in a 2D condition. The bugling failure behavior involves the interaction between the stone column, the geosynthetic encasement and the typical failure mode for stone columns has been concluded, and the bulging failure mechanism of the isolated single stone column with and without geosynthetic encasement was explained in detail.
