Recent Developments in Stochastic Finite Elements
Abstract Several recent developments in the stochastic finite element method are reviewed. Topics addressed include: the modeling and discretization of random fields, the weighted integral approach, computation of response gradients, and reliability analysis of components and systems by the first and second-order reliability methods (FORM and SORM). The emphasis is on nonlinear structural behavior under time-dependent loading, and both cumulative damage and first-cxcursion failures arc considered. The presentation introduces several new methods of analysis, including the optimum linear estimation method for representation of random fields, the conditional derivative method for computation of response gradients for inelastic structures, and a new algorithm for computing the first-excursion probability of uncertain structural systems.
